Using precious water efficiently

Three steps to
coping with dryness

Australians have become expert at making do with very little water in their gardens but there isn't just one way to make the most of this precious resource.

Tanks come in all shapes and sizes - Slimline tanks in tandem
Slimline tanks in tandem

First, try to conserve water

  • Keep a bucket or plastic jug handy in the kitchen or bathroom to collect water while waiting for the hot or cold water to come through.
  • Keep a bucket in the shower to catch runoff.
  • Use a low-sodium, liquid laundry detergent so you can capture and use greywater from the washing machine.
Redirect water from a downpipe
When it rains, one Scotts customer catches water with a temporary downpipe bypass. The water is stored in large covered bins to prevent mosquitos breeding.

Second, harvest your rainwater

Australians are being encouraged to install rainwater tanks - governments are even offering rebates for certain tank installations.

Tanks are available in all shapes and sizes but not everyone has a property that accommodates a tank so gardeners are finding alternative ways to harvest the rain.

Third, use products that optimise your use of water

Scotts have a range of products that can help as well.

Soil wetting agents help the soil absorb and hold water so that watering is needed less often.  The wetting agent technology works so well we have built it into a number of our products.
